School Nurse Information

Joey Quintana – District Nurse

The nurse’s office is located in the elementary building, but services all three campuses.

Medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, must be in the original containers. A permission slip signed by the parent/guardian must be filled out. See our Medicine at School below for details. Medication to be taken once, twice or three times a day does NOT need to be sent to school. It can be given before school, after school &/or at bedtime.

Students should not be sent to school with a fever. A student has fever if it is 100.0 degrees or greater. If a child has fever at school, they will be sent home. Students should be fever free for 24 hours without using fever reducing medications such as Tylenol, Motrin or Advil before returning to school.

  • A School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group appointed by the
school district to serve at the district level. Members of the SHAC
come from different areas of the community and from within the school
district. The majority of members must be parents who are not
employed by the district. Texas law (Texas Education Code, Title 2,
    Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004) requires the
establishment of a SHAC for every school district. SHACs are required
to meet at least four times each year.
SHACs assist the districts in ensuring that local community values are
reflected in health education instruction. Additionally, SHACs play an
important role in strengthening the connection between health and
learning. They can help parents and community stakeholders reinforce
the knowledge and skills children need to stay healthy for a lifetime.

  • School Wellness Subcommittee was formed to develop, implement and review and update the wellness policy. This policy outlines the district's approach to ensuring environments and opportunities for all students to practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors throughout the school day. The subcommittee met on May 5, 2021 to assess implementation of the wellness policy through the guidelines. The triennial assessment was compiled and updates were made to the plan.

  • SB 1586 passed making it easier for parents/guardians to obtain an exemption form online rather than contacting DSHS directly and having the form mailed to their address. The DSHS state website has been updated and the religious/conscientious exemption form has been uploaded as a downloadable version.

    • The exemption form must be notarized properly to be considered valid and accepted by the school.
    • Religious/conscientious exemptions are valid for two years from the date of notary.
    • Provisional enrollment requirements still apply while waiting for parents to turn in valid exemptions. While awaiting a child’s exemption form, they may only be provisionally enrolled if they meet one of the following provisional enrollment qualifications:
      • 1. Transfer Students - Students transferring from one Texas public or private school to another Texas school.
      • 2. Homeless Students - Students who are defined as homeless according to the federal McKinney-Vento Act, 42 U.S.C. §11302.
      • 3. Active Duty Dependents - Students who are dependent on active-duty service members and are waiting on the transfer of their immunization records.
      • 4. Children in Foster Care - Students who are in foster care and are waiting on the transfer of their immunization record.
      • 5. Students In-Progress - Students who have received at least one dose of each specified age-appropriate vaccine required by the DSHS rules. To remain enrolled, students must complete the required subsequent doses of each vaccine series on schedule and as rapidly as medically feasible and provide acceptable evidence of vaccination to the school. A school nurse or school administrator shall review the immunization status of a provisionally enrolled student every 30 days to ensure continued compliance in completing the required doses of vaccination. If, at the end of the 30-day period, a student has not received a subsequent dose of vaccine, the student is not in compliance and the school shall exclude the student from school attendance until the required dose(s) is (are) administered.
